My grandfather’s missile training in Soviet Russia

#Familyarchive

Traveling 9,600 km to return home upon learning that my grandmother has Alzheimer's, I am determined to learn about my grandmother before her memory fades away.

Delving into my family’s past, I come to realize that the legacy of war has not only impacted my family but also hindered my grandmother and mother from living a normal life, due to the deeply rooted patriarchy and patriotism in post-war Vietnam. After serving the Communist Party for 17 years, my grandfather's extra-marital affairs were exposed on national TV, publicly humiliating his wife. The Party penalized them for not upholding the image of a model family, causing my grandmother to enforce a strict and austere education on my mother and me, her granddaughter.

The TV incident sparked a new cold war within my family and created distance between the women. They started to show care in strict and controlling ways: my mother installed CCTV to monitor my activities, and my grandmother violated my privacy by reading my diary, causing me to leave home. While unraveling my family’s past, this film is my attempt to take ownership of my own narrative by encouraging women in my family to retell the stories from their perspectives.
